Chocolate and diamonds: Why volcanoes could be 'a girl's best friend'  [2012-05-16]
ScienceDaily (May 16, 2012) — Scientists from the University of Southampton have discovered a previously unrecognised volcanic process, similar to one that is used in chocolate manufacturing, which gives important new insights into the dynamics of volcanic eruptions. The scientists investigated how a process called 'fluidised spray granulation' can occur during kimberlite eruptions to produce well-rounded particles containing fragments from Earth's mantle, most notably diamonds.  подробнее...

Volcanic Gases  [2012-05-07]
Volcanoes . . . those are, like, lava, right? Yes, volcanoes would be nothing without molten rock. But they would be nothing, either, without gases.  подробнее...

Yellowstone 'super-eruption' less super, more frequent than thought  [2012-04-30]
The Yellowstone 'super-volcano' is a little less super -- but more active -- than previously thought. Researchers say the biggest Yellowstone eruption, which created the two-million-year-old Huckleberry Ridge deposit, was actually two different eruptions at least 6,000 years apart.  подробнее...

Media Advisory: Volcano Detective Kicks Off Centennial Commemoration with Free Public Lecture  [2012-04-19]
ANCHORAGE, Alaska mdash; One hundred years ago this June, Novarupta and Katmai volcanoes, in what is now Katmai National Park amp; Preserve, exploded in a 3-day volcanic eruption. This historic eruption created the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, which early explorers called the eighth wonder of the world.  подробнее...

Volcanic plumbing provides clues on eruptions and earthquakes  [2012-04-12]
Two new studies into the 'plumbing systems' that lie under volcanoes could bring scientists closer to understanding plate ruptures and predicting eruptions -- both of which are important steps for protecting the public from earthquake and volcanic hazards.

Colorful New Publication Illustrates a Century of Volcano Science in Hawaii  [2012-04-05]
The Story of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory mdash; A Remarkable First 100 Years of Tracking Eruptions and Earthquakes (Online publication (PDF). HAWAII ISLAND, Hawaii mdash;2012 marks 100 years of continuous volcano and earthquake monitoring at the U.S.  подробнее...

Mega volcanoes 'may be predicted'  [2012-02-02]
The eruption of some of the largest volcanoes on the planet could be predicted several decades before the event, according to researchers. Analysis of rock crystals from the Greek island of Santorini suggests eruptions are preceded by a fast build-up of magma underground, which might be detected using modern instrumentation.(BBC)

Research shows rise in volcano dangers  [2012-02-02]
Scientists have known for decades that hidden under those impressive vistas at sites such as Death Valley and Yellowstone National Park are magma pools that under the right conditions can trigger explosive eruptions.  подробнее...

Volcanic origin for Little Ice Age  [2012-01-31]
The Little Ice Age was caused by the cooling effect of massive volcanic eruptions, and sustained by changes in Arctic ice cover, scientists conclude.(BBC)

Death Valley's Big Bang: Volcano "Potentially Active"  [2012-01-26]
A volcano in Death Valley National Park might be more dangerous than previously thought. A mile and a half wide (2.4 kilometers) and 600 feet (180 meters) deep, California's Ubehebe Crater came explosively into being long ago when rising magma hit water.  подробнее...
